What operating system(s) do you use?

Well what operating systems does everybody use? And what is your favorite operating system?

I use both linux and windows regularly, as for my favorite, I am going to have to go with Windows Vista. Despite what lots appear to say about Vista, I find it to be extremely stable, and have great performance. I find that windows vista seems to greatly outperform linux on a machine when it comes to graphics, and graphical user interfaces, and so now after using Vista, it has become my favorite operating system. (Plus there is also the fact that windows supports far more software that I can't live without than linux)

RE: What operating system(s) do you use?

Vista outperforms other OS's simply because it ships on the newest computers. I'm sure linux would run just as well on a computer that new. XP too. Doesn't it require a bunch of new graphics technology? Think about how nicely it would run if it weren't for all of the fancy graphics and useless features they added.

I'm sticking with XP for now, until I can make the switch to linux. I also use W2K occasionally.

RE: What operating system(s) do you use?

Well you can easily disable any of the new features that they have added, if you don't like them and save a little on system resources...but the computer seems to outperform even when it is running on the battery (where it restricts it to using 50% of the processor). But i can see that yes a newer computer is going to perform better than an old one, but in terms of reliability....vista seems to beat both linux and xp.

I have trouble in linux with things sometimes just closing on me, or never starting (taking forever to start is another common one), or telling me it is already running when it isn't.

Xp I have some reliability issues too, lots of Just In-Time Debugging errors randomly popping up from i have no idea what....and even more errors saying "the instruction could not be read".

Maybe it is just that the computer has some issues, but I have yet to have any issues in vista which is why I like it so much.

I use XP right now... I'm waiting a few months before even looking into Vista to make sure all the bugs and driver issues have been resolved.

I use:

  • Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn (dual-boot)
  • Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (dual-boot)
  • Windows XP Professional SP2
  • Windows Vista Home Premium

I have to say Ubuntu and Vista are both good. I use Vista more but I still use Ubuntu from time to time.

Well and wine won't run everything yet....seems to be still plenty of issues running stuff, especially games. (at least that has been my experience)

I am running Windows Vista on my computer at the moment and I think that it looks absolutely fantastic. It's not slow for me and the designs are very interesting.

And once you get used to the design, going back to windows xp and lower seems a little hard to navigate, like things are not in very intuitive places.
